KOP 10 Miler

ABCarlos

I think some of these are my pics, but not 100% sure. There are a few people who take pics at this event. If you get a chance check out the site. It is a worthwhile cause and everyone seems to enjoy the race.

This is the third year it has been put on. You can check out my pics at:

http://www.shutterfly.com/pro/medinapps/10miler

Of course yet again I am doing things last minute. The race is tomorrow, but if anyone wants to run there is still time to sign up. I think they are doing registrations today. Check out the site for more info… www.kingofprussia10miler.com

Proud to be a Catholic!

ABCarlos

I was trying to find a picture to go with this article/letter. A friend of mine, actually a Brother of mine sent this out via email and I thought it was a great idea to share. I took this picture a few years ago when I was in Santa Clara. It is actually a picture of a church. They had these fountains. I was staying at a hotel right across the street. I stopped by the gardens a few times just to reflect and pray. Isn’t it great how thing work out.

So yes I am proud to be a Catholic. Not only that I am proud to be a member of the Knight’s of Columbus.

Maybe we all need a little more pride in the positive, rather than the embarrassment of the negative……

Excerpts of an article written by non-Catholic Sam Miller – a prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman:

“Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church?

Do you know – the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%.

The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students.

The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people – not just Catholics – in the United States today.

But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage.

Let me give you some figures that Catholics should know and remember. For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by the United Methodist Church, 41.8% of clergy women reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed.
Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem.

A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving.

The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not
necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now.

Walk with your shoulders high and you head higher. Be a proud member of the most
important non-governmental agency in the United States . Then remember what Jeremiah said: ‘Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls’. Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions.

Be proud that you’re a Catholic.”

Thanks,
Carlos Medina

On the Road Again…

ABCarlos

Well I do not have any more pics with me and I did not want to repost the ones I did before. Sure I got tons more pics, but this time I want to concentrate on words. I sent this email out a couple of days ago to some of my Brother Knights in my current council.

Hey Brothers,

I neglected to mention something. I still keep in touch with my previous council and one of the big events that is still close to my heart is a fundraiser they have every year to fund scholarship for local kids. It is for the local parish in San Antonio, but I wanted to ask everyone to pray for our Brothers in Texas as they make a yearly journey to the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle [http://www.olsjbasilica.org/web/home] in San Juan, TX. I will give you some back ground so you can pray for them at critical stops along their journey. I may have mentioned this to some of you, but I am not sure if I shared with the council.

This started about 10 years ago as a way to raise awareness for vocations. Two Brother Knights walked from San Antonio to Austin, TX. They walked over the course of a few days. Over the years it grew and it has become a crucial component of a scholarship fund the council supports. The last few years they have given out approx $10,000 a year to high school and 1st year college students. Over the course of the years I think more than $100,000 has been given away.

So how do they raise this money? For the last few years they have walked in teams to the Basilica. I have joined them on the walk a couple of times. Some of you may have been to Texas, but the route they take from San Antonio to San Juan, is an arduous trip. It is very timely that the journey is done during lent. I found myself reflecting a lot on Jesus’ travels thru the desert. This is southwest Texas after all. Even in March it is already getting warm. Usually it is a group of 15 to 20 men and they walk in teams of 3 for 3 miles at a time. See the theme? All in all over 300 miles are covered over the course of the 3 days it takes to get there, hmm another 3!

It not only is a wonderful way to raise money, but I solidified many friendships on those walks. After all, we slept wherever we could. There are a couple of parishes along the way that put us up for the night and even feed us. Or should I say them. Needless to say I cherish my memories of my walks, maybe not the memories of the blisters! Since I no longer live in Texas I try to do something while they are on the walk. I usually pray a rosary during my lunch break at work and call them while they are on the road.

The greatest thing is arriving at the Basilica on the third day and being received by all the visitors and especially our families. I am not sure if it is the fact of knowing the journey is almost over or seeing our wives and children run out to hug us that keeps us going. The next day we have a special mass at the Basilica. It is a great tradition and is something I miss the most about my previous council.

I just wanted to share this with everyone. The scholarships are only open to local kids in the parish, but if anyone would like to make a donation you can send it to:

Knight of Columbus Council #8175
C/O Robert Salinas
9542 Sage Terrace
San Antonio, TX 78251

I just ask that you pray for our fellow Brothers on their Journey. They start this Thursday at approx 9am. They leave the Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church parking lot and make their way southwest towards San Juan, TX. They usually stop walking at a little bit after dusk for safety reasons and start the next day as soon as there is light. So pray for them especially during these times.

Vivat Jesus
SK Carlos Medina

I posted last year about the walk. I should probably start a website for it or maybe at least a facebook page. Anything to bring more awareness to a couple of things, Vocations and Scholarships. So what do you mean by vocations? That means I want more young men to become Priests. I want more people to become involved in my Catholic Faith. I know I struggled when I went to college. Ha, that is an understatement, I am still going to college! I want everyone to get as much help as they need. Not only that, but make sure someone tells them “Go to college and finish it, because if you do not. You will be paying for it the rest of your life!”

So if any young high school kids reading this, this is for you!

Don’t fall in love, don’t be scared. Go get some more education. It is not about doing something for someone else. It is not about pleasing your parents or not pleasing your parents! It is not about impressing anyone by going away to some Ivy League school. It is not about running away. It is not about being pretentious. The only thing it is about is improving yourself and your chances in this world we live in. I will have to say college may not be for everyone and there are many great things you can do without a college degree, but try it! And don’t just go to a community college for the wrong reasons! Yeah do it to save money, but that is why there are scholarship programs, and financial aid, and other stuff! Just do it! We have a long life ahead of us and wasting it trying to catch up is one of the worst things you can do. Do it now when you are young, where you have energy. When you do not have 10 other things you want to do at the same time! Go and learn! It does not matter what, just go and just enjoy learning! Love will wait, parents will forgive you, and friends will skype with you. Just go!

Carlos

10 Things Your Kids Need to Know

ABCarlos

This post is a little different for me. There is no picture associated with it. There is no video or other multimedia element. I just got this email and I thought it was something that I deeply believe and I wanted to share it. We get wrapped up in a lot of things that are not really good for us. Not good for us physically, spiritually, emotionally, or in any other form. I am not the first person to take the high road. I do a lot of things that are not good for me, but I am always trying. I love my kids and I want to do everything I can to protect them. One of the ways I think I can protect them is by preparing them. I have 30+ years of experience on them and unlike my parents I want to share all that with them. I know that they have to learn somethings on their own, but we as parents have to guide them.

This list was written by Brian Caulfield, the editor of Fathers for Good. It is a group of Catholic Men trying to help other Catholic men do Good. I just copied and pasted…

10 Things Your Kids Need to Know …

1. You love them
Love is the foundation of any child’s life, and it is a resource he or she will draw upon throughout life. Our children can get for themselves most of the things we may fail to give them. But one thing they can never get anywhere else is parental love. Say today, “I love you,” and then give life to the words.

2. God loves them
In Deus Caritas Est (God is Love), Pope Benedict XVI writes, “I wish in my first Encyclical to speak of the love which God lavishes upon us and which we in turn must share with others.” To some children, God’s love may seem as clear as the crucifix on the wall or the picture of Jesus with his arms around the children. For others, such love may seem abstract or distant and they will need convincing. In either case, they will look to you, their father, for affirmation through your actions that the Father in heaven does love them.

3. You love their mother
The marriage relationship is the central reality in the lives of children. The love a father bestows on his wife will be a model for his sons of how to treat women, and a model for his daughters of how they will expect to be treated by men. As fathers, we should help them to expect only the very best.

4. Life has meaning and is worth living
Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, the most popular preacher of the 20th century, titled his 1950s TV show “Life is Worth Living.” He knew that after two world wars, a deep sadness and cynicism was threatening the culture. He knew that people needed hope and meaning – to know that, indeed, life is worth living.

The things that make it worth living are God’s love for us, our love for others and the deep mystery at the heart of creation that is reflected in the human heart. Teach your children to respect the mystery, accept the unknowable and discover their own potential for love and achievement under the eyes of God.

5. They must learn to forgive
“Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” You can say these words of the Our Father a thousand times and still not realize their full meaning. Forgiveness is absolutely essential for one to enter the kingdom of God. If we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us. Forgiveness also has the temporal benefit of reliving us of psychological burdens, freeing us from the clasp of revenge, and making possible love even of our enemies.

6. Morality matters
There are voices inside of every heart saying, I can do as I please – my law myself. And there are more than enough enticements to keep those voices alive. Yet we need only look at a playground to know that there is a law outside the self – that morality matters – when one child takes the toy of another and the offended party cries out for justice. There is a right and a wrong in life, and the sooner your child understands this, and seeks to live accordingly, the better it will go for him or her.

7. The Catholic Church is the one true Church
Yes, we still believe this, and it does matter that we teach it to our children. Although you will hear from many sources that all religions are basically the same, the Catholic Church has never taught this little bit of syncretism as official doctrine. In fact, the Church has condemned the teaching that all religions are equal.

In 2000, a document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, called Dominus Jesus, caused some stir for proclaiming that the Catholic Church has always been and will always be the one Church on earth founded by Jesus for the salvation of souls. Anyone who is saved, and goes to heaven, does so only through the agency of the Catholic Church.

Only the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus, only she has the seven sacraments and the valid priesthood of Christ, and only she offers believers the true body and blood of Jesus in the Eucharist. Those who are not formal members of the Catholic Church may, by God’s mercy, make it to heaven, but only through the overabundant graces given through the Church, which draws all persons of goodwill to herself. This document was signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the present Holy Father.

8. Evil is real and they will suffer
This is the true “inconvenient truth” of our day. Evil has been downgraded to personal failure or genetic tendency, and the devil has been laughed out of polite conversation as though he really has pitchfork and horns.

Suffering has been cast as something simply to be avoided or to be medicated or psychologized away.

Yet evil will confront your kids, the more they strive to be good. St. Augustine tells of that germinal moment when his peers tempted him to steal a pear. He rightly saw in this moral decision the heart of all evil – the free choice to do what is wrong when we know it is wrong. Those who are wise in their own eyes dismiss Augustine’s “scruples” and excuse the “wild oats of youth.” Yet we should teach our children that the devil roams “like a roaring lion” seeking souls to devour. They must stand strong in faith and resist temptation.

9. One day they will die
Despite the best medical efforts, death is inevitable. Your children will see you die or, God forbid, you will see one of them die. Death is the universal sentence. Yet death is not the thing to be most feared or even regretted. The great benefit of death is that it gives form and structure to life. We know we have an end, and only so much time. We want to believe, more than anything, that we will outlast the grave. And – lo and behold – there is one religion that says we do and can actually prove it! The Catholic religion proclaims that Christ rose from the dead and founded the one Church that gives us all the means on earth to gain everlasting life as well. Good news for sore souls.

10. Love is stronger than death
We may have heard this at a Catholic wake our funeral. “For strong as death is love, relentless as the nether world is devotion, … Were one to offer all his riches to buy love, he would be roundly mocked (Song of Songs 8:6-7).

The love of Christ has rescued us from death, so now we need not live in the fear of the shadow of death, but are free sons and daughters of God, destined for love in eternity.

Knight’s Walk Post #3

Carlos

Ok the last post did not look exactly the way I wanted it to, but it looked ok. at least I have the light box working and that looks cool. I still have to tweak the size of the final image. I guess it depends on the resolution of who is viewing the site. I wanted to make them big enough to see all the detail, but still fit within the screen. Also, I wanted each image to open from the post into the light box not have to go to a seperate page for each image and then go into the lightbox. Which is happening now, but I do not see the description anywhere. So you just see the caption, but not the other details I wrote about each image. I guess I just need to look at my tags and see what I am leaving out…Here is another set of images. Let me know what you think.

As you can see, sometimes the road take a toll on your feet. I am not going to say whose foot this is, but he knows who he is.

My son ran out to meet us when we started walking in the field. It was nice to have your family waiting for you at the end of this journey.

I just got off the phone with Robert and they are almost to Falfurrias. That is the second stop. They said it has been hot and windy this trip. I told him, so what’s different than all the other years…

we are in the home stretch now...

I remember one year, the field we were walking thru was flooded. I do not think it was this picture, but it was all muddy, but no one cared. We just kept walking. I do not even want to know where the water came from.

Well in Texas this is the breakfast of champions. We don’t eat no damn wheaties or bagels Yall!

Walking along a major highway can be dangerous, but thank God we have not had any problems. Well at least not since I have been walking. This lady did stop and gave a donation once…

I guess George thought I was focused on him.

I took a group shot of them and then they started walking away. I guess George, the muscle man, was posing for me, but I did not catch it. Oops!

This was one of the large towns close to where I used to live.

My place is between Poteet and San Antonio, but on the other side of Poteet is Pleasanton and Jourdanton. That was where the closest Walmart was. We do not walk by my place, that is on a parallel highway to the west of the highway we follow.

Knights Walk Post #1

ABCarlos

Here is the first of a few post of the end of this week that I am going to do. Like I mentioned tomorrow morning a group of my Brother Knights will embark on a 3 day journey through the southern half of Texas. They start out at my old parish, Resurrection of the Lord and end their journey at The Basillica of our Lady in San Juan, TX. I have made the trip 3 times and I really miss it. I cannot wait to join them again soon. Those who know me, know that I am not in the best physical shape, but I can walk. I do not walk fast, but at my own pace. We usually walk in small groups. Several groups walk for 3 miles at a time. We all walk about 12-18 miles a day. The entire ground is covered by someone, but not no one walks the entire distance. We are not trying to kill ourselves. At night we rest.

First pic…

I wanted to see how the new lightbox plugin is working so I am going to stop here. I might group a few pics in the next post…

Upcoming post…

ABCarlos
Upcoming post...

I am making a commitment to post everyday for the next 4 days. Since I am in Pennsylvania, I cannot join my fellow Brother Knights as they walk from San Antonio to San Juan, TX. Yes, you heard me correctly, we walk from San Antonio to San Juan. More specifically we start at our Parish Resurrection of the Lord and we end at the Basillica of Our Lady in San Juan, TX. I uploaded a very simple map of the route. I cannot be there, but they know I am with them in spirit and prayer. For those of you interested, we do this to raise money for scholarships for the youth of parish. You can contact Robert Salinas to make donations. I think I have missed 2 walks. I was thinking of hopping on my jet and walking with them this year, but with the economy in the gutter I had to lend my jet to the execs of GM, Ford and Chrysler so they can go to some meetings in DC. Then they called and told me that they had to sell it. Damn fools! hehe! Keep an eye out for the next few posts. I will be posting pics of the past walks.

Some Kinda Funny!

ABCarlos
Some Kinda Funny!

I am posting this a little late, but if anyone reads this please come out and join us. My parish is putting together a play. I do not think it a play about nothing (name that reference). It is several skits put together. I have not seen the script, or seen any of the rehearsals, but I hear it is funny for all ages and it is pretty fast paced. There are some pretty cool people at my Parish. For those not in the know it is Mother of Divine Providence or MDP for short. Check out the site for more info. Check out this site for more info on the play: ETC Christmas Check this link for nothing really, I just made it up… The play is this coming weekend. It is so good that I am flying back early from Chicago to see it on opening night. The opening night is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of MDP. It might not be the opening night, but we are sponsoring one night. I say we because I am a member of the Knights of Columbus of MDP. Check out our site….

Thank you for your interest and I hope to either see or not see (it might be dark) everyone at this worthy event.

Carlos
